Sisterhood: Achievement, Respect, Fun and Freedom (ARFF)
FROM OUR SISTERHOOD:

The Sisterhood Board has been hard at work developing programs, setting the budget and communicating with our Bet Chaverim Synagogue Board. To that end, Sisterhood has requested and scheduled a joint board meeting with the Synagogue Board for
Sunday September 12 at the Federal Way Regional Library in Meeting Room 1 and the Conference Room. All congregants are invited so feel welcome to come see what we are up to and how we are coordinating Sisterhood programs with the Bet Chaverim‘s Religious Committee calendar and Temple events.
Bet Chaverim Sisterhood sponsored a very successful and interesting Books and Bagels program at the Federal Way Library. We were seven in attendance reviewing a couple of interesting books each-- fiction and non-fiction. This is a great way to find new books to read, and get to know each other‘s interests. The refreshments were delicious, including straight-out-of-the oven bagels from Big Apple Bagels right here in Des Moines. Then three of us continued our literary day at the Panama Hotel in Seattle, the setting of Hotel On The Corner of Bitter and Sweet, for a tour of the historically preserved bath house and lunch at the Panama‘s tea house in Japantown. Fascinating.
Won‘t you join us in filling the pantry with canned foods and toiletries for Jewish Family Services center in Kent, for people of all faiths who are in need during the high holy days and year round. The need is great.
As always, the entire community and guests are welcome to all Sisterhood functions and board meetings. I wish to extend a special thank you to Rabbi Harkavy, Howard Orlean and Rebecca Garcia for keeping the doors of communication open and welcoming our input.

Sarah’s Key
(by Tatiana DeRosanay)
This novel is captivating historical fiction. Two tales are woven together telling the story of the Velodrome d'Hiver round up of Jews in Paris July 1942. The round up actually occurred. One is the story of a modern-day American woman Julia, a journalist living and working in Paris 2002. The other is the story of Sarah, a Jewish child living in occupied France, Paris during the 1940s. Julia is assigned to develop a story for the magazine she works for regarding the 60th anniversary of the Vel d’Hiv round up. Julia uncovers a story that is linked to her life. During her investigation we learn how the round up occurred and how the French today have certain attitudes about the occupation. The stories are tragic, yet I wanted to keep turning pages to discover how the stories would intertwine. The stories are romantic, as I wanted to discover how the stories would be completed. The author remarkably describes the events of that summer in 1942 in her fictitious story. Her characters have great dimension and I could easily envision scenes. I still think about the stories having read the book already 2 months ago. Haunting!
