While still very much a part of winter, February is a month filled with heartwarming holidays.
School children look forward to watching out for the groundhog on Feb. 2; with Tu bishvat on Feb. 8,
Jews welcome the New Year for Trees; romantics go for candy, flowers and restaurant reservations on Valentine's Day.
Others honor football games and presidents and this year we get to add an extra day for Leap Year.
However you spend your month, may it be filled with pleasant memories!

FEBRUARY – Women’s Shabbaton Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10:00 – 2:00

Got the winter blahs? We invite all women to recharge their batteries at our Women’s Shabbaton where
we’ll learn ways to incorporate Judaism into our daily lives.
Rabbi Sarah Newmark will lead us through a meaningful day beginning with a Torah service from 10 – 12
that will feature Torah readings by Bet Chaverim members.
During lunch we’ll discuss the challenges of keeping Judaism alive on a daily basis in today’s fast-paced world.
Bring your ideas and your appetites! We’ll give a final jolt to our batteries and work off lunch by learning some fun Israeli folkdances.
It’s a complete package for the body and soul, and it’s free! As part of the lunch,
we’ll have a Friendship Salad. If you have a non-lettuce ingredient you’d like to add to the salad, please bring it.
Hope to see you then!

Looking ahead…. .

Sarah’s Key (by Tatiana DeRosanay)

This novel is captivating historical fiction. Two tales are woven together telling the story of the Velodrome d'Hiver round up of Jews in Paris July 1942. The round up actually occurred. One is the story of a modern-day American woman Julia, a journalist living and working in Paris 2002. The other is the story of Sarah, a Jewish child living in occupied France, Paris during the 1940s. Julia is assigned to develop a story for the magazine she works for regarding the 60th anniversary of the Vel d’Hiv round up. Julia uncovers a story that is linked to her life. During her investigation we learn how the round up occurred and how the French today have certain attitudes about the occupation. The stories are tragic, yet I wanted to keep turning pages to discover how the stories would intertwine. The stories are romantic, as I wanted to discover how the stories would be completed. The author remarkably describes the events of that summer in 1942 in her fictitious story. Her characters have great dimension and I could easily envision scenes. I still think about the stories having read the book already 2 months ago. Haunting!
