Bet Chaverim is located on the grounds of Saltwater Church, a Unitarian Universalist congregation.
We have shared the location with them since 1999.
About the Saltwater Church congregation:
The Unitarian Universalists have been in the Seattle area since 1885.
During the depression the they were forced to sell their buildings, but a small group of members kept the parts of their organization active.
At the request of the Eastshore Unitarian Church leadership, several couples were asked to form a congregation in South King County.
Couples began to meet in each other’s homes and started a children’s education program.
As the congregation grew, they rented several larger facilities in the Des Moines area.
In 1958, they began looking for property and purchased the 5 acre property where the church is located today.
They built a sanctuary and several education buildings.
Tragically in June 1969, a fire burned down the main building and vandals damaged the other buildings.
The congregation pulled together and immediately began rebuilding.
The new building opened in November 1969. The education building was added in 1988.
